Leaders Call for Review After 49 House Websites Defaced

Leaders Call for Review After 49 House Websites Defaced

Following the president’s State of the Union address, a hacker infiltrated 49 House of Representatives websites of both political stripes to post an obscene message insulting President Barack Obama, according to a report from the Associated Press.

House chief administrative officer spokesman Jeff Ventura told the press that while most House websites are managed totally by House technicians, individual offices are permitted to contract with a third party to manage new features and updates. The sites that succumbed to the online attack were managed by GovTrends (www.switch2govtrends.com), a private vendor based in Alexandria, Virginia.

Ventura told the AP that, while performing an update, GovTrends left itself vulnerable, letting the hacker penetrate individual member sites and committees overnight. This let the attacker leave a message insulting the president, who spoke at the House Wednesday night. The message read that it was “from Brasil,” however, the true origins of the attack are unclear, as well as any specific political motivations.

Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi and Minority Leader John A. Boehner have called for an immediate review of how hackers were able to overtake the 49 websites. Ventura said that 18 House sites operated by GovTrends experienced similar attacks in August, and that both Pelosi and Boehner said they had they had previously asked for a security review and a tightening of website defenses.

Web Host HostGator Donates $100K to Haiti Fund

Web hosting company HostGator  announced on Monday it has donated $100,000 to the American Red Cross Haiti Relief and Development fund.

This marks HostGator’s eight year history and the third such donation to the American Red Cross (www.redcross.org).

The funds will help the Red Cross provide support for the relief efforts in Haiti, which will likely include recruiting additional aid workers, sending supplies, and providing financial resources for the recovery of the government and people of Haiti.

“What happened in Haiti is a tragedy,” says Brent Oxley, HostGator’s founder and CEO. “I’m glad to be in a position where we’re able to help those in need. It’d be wrong to do nothing in light of what happened to the people. Their lives are going to be forever changed in a way that most Americans can barely fathom.”

HostGator is also participating in the Hosting for Haiti alliance, an effort in which many Web hosting companies are providing financial and public resources for relief in Haiti.hostgator_logo

Other companies in the hosting industry have also recently announced their contributions to the relief and aid cause, including a $500,000 donation to Hope for Haiti by Go Daddy and a $10,000 donation to the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund initiative by SingleHop.

On January 12, a number of earthquakes ranging from 6.5 to 7.3 on the Richter scale, devastated island nation of Haiti.

The local government estimates the death toll to be about 200,000, with another 1.5 million people homeless.

In addition to its financial donation, HostGator says it will continue to encourage its customers and employees to donate to the efforts in Haiti through Twitter and other company communication channels.

WHIR TV recently interviewed HostGator chief marketing officer Chad Bean and chief operating officer Lance Custen about its recent employment opportunities.

US Census Bureau Uses Cloud Computing

Posted under Hosting Current News by Jeff Jones on Sunday 24 January 2010 at 3:24 am

US Census Bureau Uses Cloud Computing

The US Census Bureau (www.census.gov) revealed this week it has tentatively begun using cloud computing to provide a more cost-effective and rapid delivery of its services to its employees and the public, according to a report by Information Week.

The Census planning process takes 10 years to execute, however, the actual census is performed over just a few months.

The Bureau is currently in the preliminary stages of hiring and documenting about 1.4 million temporary workers, setting up 500 temporary census offices, and leveraging 170,000 partners that will help carry out the census locally.

In the end, the Bureau will mail out 600 million forms and count about 340 million people and 130 million households.

Census CIO Brian McGrath said that the Bureau will make budget cuts once the census is completed, which poses a significant challenge for the organization.

The Bureau will try to resolve this issue by introducing cost-effective practices, such as deploying a few cloud services.

McGrath said the organization is already seeing the benefits of the cloud.

For instance, when the organization ran into problems with its previously planned in-house database, it turned to Salesforce.com to store information on its 170,000 partners.

The company was able to get the database up and running in 6 weeks — a task that often takes months or even years for governments to accomplish.

The 2010 US Census website (www.census.gov/2010census) is also using cloud services, such as Akamai’s content delivery network to handle any traffic spikes.

Still in its early stages, the Census’ cloud strategy also involves a major consolidation and virtualization effort as it will eventually implement a multi-tenant architecture inside its own data center.

Perimeter Releases List of Greatest Information Threats for 2010

Posted under Hosting Current News by Jeff Jones on Tuesday 19 January 2010 at 12:44 am

Perimeter Releases List of Greatest Information Threats for 2010

With the new year come new challenges, and with that in mind Perimeter E-Security, the trusted provider of information security services which provides delivers enterprise-class protection and compliance to companies of all sizes, unveiled its Top 10 Information Security Threats for 2010.

“The start of a new year is a great time for companies to evaluate their information security practices and begin thinking about what threats they’ll be facing in the coming year,” said Kevin Prince, CTO, Perimeter E-Security. “As these security threats are becoming more serious and difficult to detect, it is vital for companies to understand what they can do to best protect their systems and information.”

Perimeter’s ranking of the Top 10 information security threats for 2010:

1. Malware (Rising Threat)
Last year, Malware was listed as the second highest ranked threat to organizations on Perimeter E-Security’s list of top threats. There are many methods to install malware on systems, including the use of client-side software vulnerabilities. Browsers remain a top target for vulnerabilities. In 2009, the FBI reported that for the first time ever, revenue from cyber crime had exceeded drug trafficking, estimated at taking in more than one billion annually in profits.

2. Malicious Insiders (Rising Threat)
Malicious insiders were listed as the top threat for 2009, but have fallen to the #2 spot for 2010. With the downturn in the economy last year, it was no surprise that many desperate and disgruntled employees attempted to exploit the companies they currently or previously worked for. There is no way to eliminate the threat of malicious insiders completely, but through good security policies and followed procedures, the incidents could be a fraction of what they are today. With the economy still suffering and still high unemployment levels, Malicious Insiders w2ill continue to be a threat.

3. Exploited Vulnerabilities (Steady Threat)

Vulnerability exploit is at the heart of hacking and data breaches. Worms, viruses, malware, and a host of other attack types often rely on vulnerability exploit to infect, spread and perform the actions cyber criminals want. And yet, organizations are still not doing what they need to for patch management. Hackers are more often exploiting client side vulnerabilities and other vulnerabilities associated with 3rd party applications.

4. Careless Employees (Steady Threat)
Careless and untrained insiders will continue to be a very serious threat to organizations in 2010. Insiders can be broken down into three categories: careless & untrained employees, employees that are duped or fall prey to social engineering type attacks, and malicious employees. Protecting a network and critical and sensitive data is done very differently for each type. Policies, procedures, training and a little technology can make a world of difference in reducing an organization’s risk to careless insiders.

5. Mobile Devices (Rising Threat)
Mobile devices have become a plague for information security professionals. There are worms and other malware that specifically target these devices such as the iPhone worm that would steal banking data and enlist these devices in a botnet. Theft is still a major cause of data breaches as mobile devices, especially laptops, are the main culprits. Tens of thousands of laptops are stolen each year and often these have sensitive data that require public disclosure as a data breach.

6. Social Networking (Rising Threat)
Social networking sites such as Facebook, MySpace, Twitter and others have changed the way people communicate with each other, but these sites can pose serious threats to organizations. One main problem is that there is a trust component to these sites which makes them fertile ground for identity thieves. There is also a personal safety issue. Social networking sites are a stalker’s dream come true. Social networking sites are breeding grounds for SPAM, scams, scareware and a host of other attacks and these threats will continue to rise.

7. Social Engineering (Steady Threat)
Social engineering is always a popular tool used by cyber criminals and phishing is still a popular method for doing just that. In fact, these new venues make social engineering even more effective. This year will have an added measure of complexity when it comes to social engineering attacks. Beginning sometime mid-2010, domain names will be expanded to include Japanese, Arabic, Hindi and even Greek characters, and with all of these characters being available for domain names, no longer will looking at a domain help one determine if it’s legitimate or not.

8. Zero-Day Exploits (Rising Threat)
Zero-day exploits are when an attacker can compromise a system based on a known vulnerability but no patch or fix exists, and they have become a very serious threat to information security. Zero-day vulnerabilities are being discovered in traditionally very secure protocols such as SSL and TLS. The zero-day vulnerability could also be in providers.

9. Cloud Computing Security Threats (Rising Threat)
Using cloud based (i.e. Internet based) applications may not be as secure as once thought with many stories in 2009 regarding cloud based security issues. Many are calling for forced encryption to access “in the cloud” services. As cloud computing grows in popularity over the next few years, cloud security will become a very big issue.

10. Cyberespionage (Rising Threat)
Cyberespionage is a threat that’s being heard more and more all the time and there have been a flood of stories in 2009 on this subject. Most of these incidents surround government bodies and agencies and therefore have not been a huge threat to most individual organizations. However, since cyberespionage has major implications for the government, it is a rising threat that must be closely monitored.

“Information security is an ever-evolving discipline that requires tremendous expertise, time, and money to effectively manage. Every organization should take stock of what they are doing today and how well their current solutions mitigate the risk of the top 10 threats. In most cases, adjustments will need to be made and new technology should be implemented to ensure that the organization is properly prepared for what cyber criminals, spammers, phishers, and hackers are planning for 2010,” added Prince.

Google to Consider Pulling Out of China

Posted under Hosting Current News by Jeff Jones on Thursday 14 January 2010 at 12:24 am

Google to consider pulling out of China

Frustrated by computer network attacks originating from China targeting its email service and corporate infrastructure, Google said it may pull out of China, which could anger China’s business community and even cause a rift in US-China relations.

In an official Google blog post by corporate development senior vice president and chief legal officer David Drummond, the company stated that a mid-December attack that stole its intellectual property was different than a normal security incident. The attack was not just on Google, but also on at least 20 other large companies from a wide range of businesses spanning the IT, finance, technology, media and chemical sectors.

Perhaps more damning, however, is that Google said it has evidence suggesting that one of the main objectives of the attack was to access the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists. And while the attempt fell short of its objective, in the course of its investigation, Google found independent of the attack that of dozens of American, Chinese and European Gmail users who are advocates of human rights in China had their accounts routinely accessed by third parties. “These accounts have not been accessed through any security breach at Google, but most likely via phishing scams or malware placed on the users’ computers,” Drummond wrote.

Combined with attempts over the past year to further limit free speech on the web, these attacks and the surveillance they have uncovered has led it to re-examine “the feasibility” of its operations in China.

“We launched Google.cn in January 2006 in the belief that the benefits of increased access to information for people in China and a more open Internet outweighed our discomfort in agreeing to censor some results. At the time we made clear that ‘we will carefully monitor conditions in China, including new laws and other restrictions on our services. If we determine that we are unable to achieve the objectives outlined we will not hesitate to reconsider our approach to China.’”

After thorough review, Google has essentially given the Chinese government an ultimatum. It will no longer continue to censor its results on Google.cn, and in the coming weeks it will discuss with the Chinese government the basis on which Google could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law. If such a search engine is not possible, Google will willfully shut down Google.cn, and potentially its offices in China.

Given the far-reaching consequences of this decision to potentially pull out of China, US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton issued a statement on the matter. “We have been briefed by Google on these allegations, which raise very serious concerns and questions. We look to the Chinese government for an explanation. The ability to operate with confidence in cyberspace is critical in a modern society and economy. I will be giving an address next week on the centrality of Internet freedom in the 21st century, and we will have further comment on this matter as the facts become clear.”
